5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

ÎLE DE RÉ BY BIKE

Discovering Ré Island

Cycling on the Ré Island means discovering breathtaking landscapes in close proximity to nature, accessing hidden beaches or taking hidden, bucolic routes. It’s also about taking the time to enjoy a ride in the fresh air, alone or with the family, stopping at any time to watch the seagulls take flight or the salt-marsh workers at work.

But to avoid minor problems or major accidents, getting around by bike on the Ile de Ré requires preparation and organization.

Here we take a look at 5 essential points, 5 boxes to tick, before you set off.

Book your rental bike

During the vacation season and at the height of the season, the bicycle rental outlets in Ré are very busy. So it’s a good idea to book the bike(s) and accessories you’ll need for your stay as early as possible. This way, you’ll avoid ending up with a bike that’s too big or too small, and you’ll be sure to have a trailer for your child or a basket for your small dog.

Cycland offers you the chance to sign up for our newsletter, so you’ll be the first to know when bookings open and when we’ve got the best deals on bike rentals.

Find the store nearest you

The Cycland network stretches across the whole Island, from south to north, in every village, and you’re never far from one of its stores. But it’s so much easier to go around the corner when you can.

Simply consult the store map on the website, and find the one nearest you.

Our team will give you a warm welcome and help you choose your bikes and routes.

Knowing and locating cycle paths

If you’re planning a trip or even a tour of the Ré by bike, it’s essential to choose an itinerary. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you forking off if you feel like it, or changing direction altogether, but it’s essential to know where the cycle paths are. The site provides you with maps of Ré cycle paths, so you can prepare your outings in advance, or even readjust them simply by consulting the site on your phone.

The network of cycle paths on Ré Island is very dense and offers a wide range of possibilities, so make sure you use them.

The right equipment

When cycling, it’s essential to be well-equipped and to adapt to the itinerary, the weather and the users.

For example, if the weather is fine, remember to wear sun cream and a hat if you don’t have a helmet. Likewise, always have a water bottle ready, and don’t wear a bathing suit – sunburns can happen very quickly!

As a family, avoid going out during the hottest part of the day, and make sure your children are well hydrated and protected from the sun.

If it’s raining, don’t forget your raincoat and rubber boots, to avoid arriving at your destination soaking wet.

Respect safety rules

When cycling, even on vacation, respect the Highway Code, and all children up to the age of 12 must wear a helmet.

Of course, you’ll need to ride on the right-hand side of the road, leave your mobile phone in your bag or pocket, and don’t ride on beaches.

In case of heavy traffic, adjust your pace.

In short: be careful … and have a great cycling vacation on the Île de Ré!
